A Bride For Christmas (Spinster Mail-Order Brides Book 2) Read online

Page 7

They arrived home later that afternoon, after all the celebrations were over. They stood on the doorstep to the residence, and Peter unlocked the door.

She didn’t know this entrance existed, as he rarely used it. The Post Office had been his life before, now he vowed to make Melody his priority, with his work coming a deservedly second-best.

He looked across at her, resplendent in her wedding dress. He looked her up and down. What did he do to deserve such a wonderful wife?

He leaned in and cupped her cheeks with his hands, and kissed her gently. She leaned into his shoulder, and rested her head. He wrapped his arms around his new bride, and sighed.

He could stand like this forever, but that would never do. They had more important things to do.

Dropping his hands, she straightened up and stared into his eyes. He stole another kiss, then scooped her up and carried her across the threshold to his home.

  Their home.

He truly loved this woman, and wanted nothing more than to spend time with her – for the rest of their lives.

  Epilogue

  Twelve months later

  Peter paced the room.

He was fully aware of the consequences of child birth, having already lost one wife that way.

Each scream saw him wincing and covering his ears. “How much longer, Mrs Grogan?” he asked as the older woman came out to give him an update.

“That I cannot tell you,” she said gently. “But she is doing fine. I don’t think it will be long and you’ll be a father.”

A father. Him, a father. That sounded good.

Another scream, this one prolonged. “I’m not sure I can take much more of this,” he said. “Knowing that my dear Melody is in so much pain.” He blinked back the tears that had threatened to push through for several hours.

Mrs Grogan led him to an armchair. “Sit yourself down and don’t worry. Henry will keep her safe.” She disappeared into the kitchen and came back a short time later with a mug of coffee. “It won’t help much, but will soothe your nerves.”

  “Thanks.”

Doc Grogan came out of the bedroom as he took the last gulp of coffee. It had helped – just a little – and he felt a little calmer. The lessening screams had helped too.

The doc approached him, and shook his hand.

“You have a beautiful baby girl,” he said, tears glistening in his eyes. This child would be like a grandchild to him.

“I have a daughter? I have a daughter!” he said, rushing to his wife and child.

Pete sat on the side of the bed, and leaned into his exhausted wife. “Thank you,” he said quietly. “Thank you for everything. For my beautiful daughter,” he glanced across at the baby, wrapped up tightly, and in her mother’s arms. “She is the best Christmas gift I’ve ever received.”
